"I told them I didn't have a brain built for math, and I never would. I passed the class anyway. Now I believe that I can do math, music, or anything else."

What Makes We Gotcha Special
-
Everything is a skill, not a talent you're born with or without.
-
Including learning. We teach the subject and how to learn. A skill that outlasts the class.
-
Real schoolwork is our training ground: a place to test different learning methods and find out what actually works for them.
-
Our goal isn't just a better grade. It's a kid who believes they can figure anything out.

Why I Built We Gotcha
I was a good learner, I just wasn't a very good student. School seemed to reward kids who knew how to play the game. I never quite figured out how to play it. I was curious, just not always about the things being graded. The pace was slow, the lessons cookie-cutter, nothing about the format matched how my brain actually worked. And home wasn't the steady place I needed it to be either. So I checked out. I was bored, acting out, passing but not really there. Teachers, guidance counselors, even my own parents, all pointed me toward a blue-collar life, never college. So that's the direction I went.
I spent three years at a car factory. Twelve-hour days, some nights not getting home until 2 AM, body wrecked. I knew I was better than that. I just didn't know how to prove it yet.
Community college didn't fix me. I was never broken. But it gave me back an environment where learning felt like a way of life again instead of a job: I had real discussions, real projects, and people around me actually trying to get better. That mattered. But the real shift, the thing that actually taught me how to learn, came later, when I decided to teach myself how to draw.
I thought all I needed was a great class or a great teacher, and that talent would follow. I had it backwards. Nobody was going to hand me the skill. I had to learn how to learn it, and once I figured that out, I realized I could apply it to anything.
That's what We Gotcha is built on. Every kid is already a natural learner, they proved it before they ever set foot in a classroom. We help them reconnect with that and teach them how to use it on purpose, so they can figure things out for themselves.
Our Learning Curriculum
Eight building blocks. Every student works through all of it.
-
The Learning Mindset — learning why "I'm not good at this" usually isn't true, and how to think like someone who can improve
-
Memory — how to actually remember what they study, not just cram it
-
Attention & Focus — how to sit down and actually get in the zone, distraction-free
-
Effective Studying — the study habits that work, and ditching the ones that feel productive but aren't
-
Thinking Skills — how to think clearly, question assumptions, and connect ideas
-
Problem Solving — how to break down a hard problem instead of freezing up
-
Habits & Performance — the daily habits (sleep, focus, time management) that quietly make or break performance
-
Becoming an Independent Learner — pulling it all together so they can teach themselves anything, without us
How Sessions Actually Work
Think of it less like tutoring, more like training, for the skill that to learn anything.
Session 1: Getting to Know Each Other
The first session isn't about diving into homework. We spend time actually getting to know each other, then walk through what to expect going forward. I'll ask what goals you're working toward, in school and outside of it. Most students don't have an answer yet, and that's fine, that becomes their first assignment. From there, we get a real baseline: where they're at right now, using a practice test on last year's material. No pretending, no starting from a guess.
Every Week After: The Real Work
Each session opens with a short lesson from our learning curriculum, then we put it into practice right away, in session or before we meet again. Then it's coursework, but not the usual way. I don't hand over answers, I ask students to explain their thinking first, then try it themselves before I step in. It's uncomfortable at first, being wrong in front of someone always is. But that discomfort is the point. Once it feels safe to be wrong, curiosity comes back, questions, guesses, and tangents follow, and when there's no homework, we go looking for something worth learning anyway.
Over the Semester: The Shift
The lie a student's been telling themselves, "I'm not a math person," "I'm just not built for this," usually surfaces early. Believing something different takes longer. Real change isn't a quick trick, most students need a semester, sometimes a full year, before it fully sticks. We're not interested in faking that timeline. By the time it does stick, it's not just their grades that move. It's how they carry themselves, in this subject and everywhere else.
Services We Offer

Your child, one tutor, full attention. We start by understanding where they actually are, then use real coursework to teach the thing school skipped: how to learn. Sessions build week over week, tracking what's working, adjusting what isn't, and slowly replacing "I can't" with real evidence otherwise. This is where most of our students start, and where the deepest work happens.
My daughter was getting D's and C's and just received her first A. I tried everything to get her interested in things, but nothing worked. Now she loves math and makeup and wants to go to college.
